The 1 thing you can do today that may help your business website’s listing on Google results…. Domain Expiration.
Recently, we came across interesting information about how renewing your domain longer than one year at a time might help with your Google Search Engine results. If you are a business owner or internet marketer, I am sure you can understand why this can be very interesting, especially if you did not consider this SEO aspect in the past. Quite simply, the notion is that it’s likely that when it comes to where your site would rank in the SERPs or search engine result pages, Google might use the expiration date for your domain as one of several metrics of authenticity for your site.
As you already know that with most SEO matters, ultimately we have to make decisions based on personal opinion and professional advice. After reading more about, we decided to inquire one of the experts on this matter. What was obvious is that, the length of the domain registration would not really matter, but this is still a potential red flag. Google is not actually saying that the length of the domain registration will not make a difference, just that it is not really important when you think of the bigger picture.
Needless to say, this is exactly what SEO is about, understanding when and which flags are important. Based on what most Google users have stated is that once you create a excellent site that can attract a lot of people, increase your web presence and so on, then it will not make a difference if your domain is just registered for a year. However, when you create a questionable site with iffy information and dubious links – basically your site looks spammy with low-quality information, a one year domain registration might be a problem. Keep in mind that unique SEO factors cannot be used to say it will always matter to some extent for every web page or website.
During the research on this matter, we also come across a write up from of one of the top engineers from Google who has mentioned that there were in excess of 200 individual checks that are placed on a website to establish ranking in search results. This simple fact alone is clearly showing that they are likely to cover most of the bases, which means that if they are focusing even a little bit on this, then domain expiration is not all that outlandish. To reinforce this idea, Google’s own search engine patent includes a line item stating:
Certain signals may be used to distinguish between illegitimate and legitimate domains. For example, domains can be renewed up to a period of 10 years. Valuable (legitimate) domains are often paid for several years in advance, while doorway (illegitimate) domains rarely are used for more than a year. Therefore, the date when a domain expires in the future can be used as a factor in predicting the legitimacy of a domain and, thus, the documents associated therewith.
Do you have a domain name that is about to expire? If yes, then you should definitely look at the available options to renew your domain a few years in advance. When you renew a domain name for over a year this will show that you are committed to your website. This could be a factor when it comes to organic search engine rankings. Are you aware that you can register a domain for even 100 years? Do you think Facebook.com is being renewed annually? As a matter of fact their domain doesn’t expire till 2020 (at the time of this writing). Since SEO can be described as an ever-changing landscape and no one really knows if Google is checking the expiration dates for sure, it would not hurt to address this matter. If you intend to keep your domain (or business) indefinitely or for a good amount of time, why wouldn’t you renew it for several years?
